I've argued with people about things like this before, and proponents will vehemently defend the position, on the grounds that "service x strips the ads", completely missing the whole mega-corporation building a spy database of it's users that Cheka would be jealous of aspect.

I would have though that Julian Assange, or the FreedomBox devs, are anything but naïve. But they created (endorse) sr as somehow and alternative to google. It baffles me.
